History and Legacy

Karnataka has been a sacred land of Guru–Virakta Mathas that have played a pivotal role in shaping spiritual and cultural values. Murusaviramath is one such historic institution. Originally established as a Virakta Matha at Hosur village (Savadatti taluk) by Poojya Shri Neelakantha Mahaswamiji, the Matha was later shifted to Bailhongal and established at billur Galli. Initially known as Tippimatha, it later became popular as Murusaviramath. Through Annadasoha (free food), Jnana Dasoha (education), spiritual discourses, and social reform activities, the Matha transformed Bailhongal into a center of learning and harmony, often referred to as Vidya Kashi.

Murusaviramath has been spiritually enriched by the leadership of 18 Peethadhipatis, beginning with Poojya Shri Neelakantha Mahaswamiji and followed by many great saints who upheld the values of Shaiva philosophy, Virakta tradition, and social service. This unbroken lineage stands as the backbone of the Matha’s spiritual strength and societal impact.

Poojya Shri Gangadhar Mahaswamiji

Poojya Shri Gangadhar Mahaswamiji played a transformative role in the growth of Murusaviramath and the surrounding region.

Despite facing poverty in his early life, he rose through discipline, devotion, and spiritual training under renowned Gurus. He mastered Vedic knowledge, Sanskrit, and Shaiva philosophy and was appointed Peethadhipati in 1976.

Key Contributions:

  • Initiated Shri Neelakantheshwara Jatra Mahotsava (1979)
  • Organized month-long Purana Pravachanas
  • Conducted Lingadeeksha, Rudraksha Dharana, and religious rites
  • Started free mass marriages for the underprivileged
  • Donated 3 acres of land for Janata housing (1980)
  • Established Shri Neelakantheshwara Vidyavardhaka Sanstha (1982)
  • Founded 25+ educational institutions
  • Honored with the National Education Ratna Award

His Lingikya was an irreparable loss to Bailhongal and Karnataka.

Poojya Shri Prabhu Neelakantha Mahaswamiji

Poojya Shri Prabhu Neelakantha Mahaswamiji ascended as the 18th Peethadhipati on 26 May 2015, fulfilling the vision and wishes of his revered Guru.
